Bionic Pop Artist and an all-around creative force, Viktoria Modesta, will take the stage this August at the European Para Championships Opening Ceremony in Rotterdam. Modesta’s disruptive approach to disability has redefined the boundaries of the human body in the media by using her prosthetic leg as a performance piece and an artistic statement.
Her bionic and retro-futuristic aesthetic in songs, videos, and live performances has captivated audiences worldwide, making her a true trailblazer in the post-disability culture and beyond.
British Modesta, who now lives in Los Angeles (USA), established herself as a symbol of empowerment & a champion of innovation by effortlessly bringing pop culture, academia, and social change into her creative practice. The struggles with a damaged leg from birth guided her artistic journey with resilience and determination, acting as a catalyst to amputate her damaged leg voluntarily at age 20. Only to reclaim ownership of her body by replacing the leg with pioneering prosthetics that would go on to defy all conventions, exhibit in museums, and inspire conversations about the new definitions of beauty, personal power and the ability itself.
Since her debut at the London 2012 Paralympic Closing Ceremony as a snow queen, Viktoria Modesta, of Latvian origin, has been releasing music, appearing on catwalks and magazines, collaborating with brands like Rolls Royce, institutions such as MIT Media Lab, the British Council & Friends of Europe, performing at the Super Bowl & Abilympics, and making friends with astronauts in her latest role as an ambassador for the first disability in space initiative, bionic experiments in in Zero Gravity and someday in space!

Tournament director Jeroen Straathof looks forward to Modesta’s performance during the Opening Ceremony. “Viktoria’s story and attitude as an amputee are empowering,” says Straathof. “She’s an international artist who has performed on many big stages and has had great collaborations. We are happy to add her to our diverse and inclusive line-up. “
The partnership will entail Modesta and her team creating a medley of her original music supported by talented Dutch musicians and dancers by her side, creating what Viktoria hopes will be an unforgettable experience.
